About the Music
The Long Road (2019) was written for and commissioned by trumpeter Zach Buie. Buie has a wonderful, warm, and fluid sound and a special way of phrasing. I was inspired by his recordings as well as the idea of the distance between us at the time of the commission. The long road (I-80, across the wide open West) has been a migration route for animals and people for hundreds, if not thousands of years. The wonder, nature, and history of traveling that stretch of highway lead me to write a contemplative and wistful kind of music.
