About the Music
Things Bright (2011) for violin, viola, and cello—refers to the constant motion and energy of my former backyard chickens, which were a continual source of joy and humor for me. The piece is in a modified scherzo and trio form, with each thematic repetition varied and extended from the original version. The larger sections of the form are variants of previous material. For example, the frenetic opening scherzo melody is turned upside-down to form the bluesy melody of the trio. The title references the hymn, “All Things Bright and Beautiful,” which is finally quoted in the d-section of the trio. The piece was written for Musica Harmonia (Joan Griffing, violin; Diane Phoenix-Neal, viola; and Beth Vanderborgh, cello) a group dedicated to peace and cultural understanding through music.
