About the Music

“Circle of Light” was written in 2019 for the 150th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage in Wyoming. Commissioned by the Equipoise Fund (equipoisefund.org), the work explores author, Ann McCutchan’s poetry using the narrative of past, present, and future by bringing new musical ideas to each time period. The text, “We are all bound up together” comes from a line in an 1866 speech given by African American suffragette, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper: “We are all bound up together in one great bundle of humanity, and society cannot trample on the weakest and feeblest of its members without receiving the curse it its own soul.” The song was premiered by the University of Wyoming Bel Canto choir, directed by Holly Dalrymple in November of 2019 and makes an appearance in the Caldera Productions and Wyoming Public Media documentary State of Equality.
